Addiction is a chronic brain disease best treated with a combination of medications and behavioral health therapy such as group therapy, individual counseling and/or 12 step meetings.
Fortunately, we live in a time where there are good medications that have been developed for the treatment of opioid use disorder and alcoholism. These medicines collectively are referred to as “Medication-assisted treatment” or “MAT”. MAT is the gold standard for the treatment of both opioid use disorder and alcoholism and has been shown to be 2-4 times more successful then those utilizing an abstinence based only approach.
